September 2023 Newsletter

Hi, {name}! Happy September to you! I am fully embracing fake fall by washing my hoodies and setting out my autumn housewares. Not a Starbucks fan, but I see a #PSL in my future. Most importantly, a break from this unprecedented heat. God-willing.

If you've been a subscriber, THANK YOU! Also, if you've been a subscriber, I hope you understand the (checks archives) multi-year delay. (See, this is why I don't do a paid newsletter.)

To my new subscribers, THANK YOU for your recent show of support! I'll likely let you down at some point, but at least it won't be a yearslong absence.

Briefly, I'll explain my plans for the newsletter. As they say on the FaceSpace, "Let's get into it."

Newsletter Goals

For a month, I've been working toward digital minimalism. Basically, not being online as much as I have for the past decade or so. So I'm slowly and steadily bringing my social media presence to a crawl, scheduling time to look online and time to post and leave. My newsletter will give me a place to share that, yes, I am very much alive and have been around.

Beyond that, social media stopped giving what it had supposed to been gave. This, I discovered on my digital minimalism journey, is by design. Rather than fight with the algorithm, I'll just share it all here. I pay a lot of money and have spent a lot of time building this website too, so lemme get me.

Here are some newsletter example elements:

  • Links to my latest work
  • Sneak peeks of my upcoming work
  • My new blog posts
  • Cool stuff I've done/eaten/seen/drunk
  • Interesting news articles
  • Opportunities for you
  • Personal announcements
  • Franklin updates
  • Ways you can help me for free

I want it to be personal and all that, and it will be, but also I'd love to find a way to have it benefit you in some way.

What Have I Been Doing All This Time?

I'm very much alive, and in the words of Chef Scott, "I been around." Eating, drinking, gallivanting, losing pandemic weight, dropping other dead weight, hanging with my best friend Franklin, getting new bylines, holding onto God's unchanging hand, moving by faith and not by sight.

That's all on Instagram, but again I plan to only post there twice a month max. Still figuring out my blog posting schedule, but no matter what you will only get newsletters from me once a month.

September Goals: Life and Website

MONEY. As always, that's the solution to all my problems. God has never ever had me outchea down bad, but of course all the thisclose job offers, combined with mounting bills, accentuated by finding a sheriff's sale notice on my door demanding $41K that I don't have for a mortgage I was forced to put on my already paid for family home less than 24 hours after having my son while still under the influence of labor and delivery pharmaceuticals... has me reasonably concerned.

But as I always say, stranger things have happened! And God really truly would never forsake me. So let's continue to think positively!

Tomorrow I have a job interview, then next week a chat about some cool contractual stuff, and God-willing I'll hear back next week about the most perfect position, a copy editor role at Capital B--a BLACK ONLINE NEWSROOM. As my number one friendTor Jesmyn Ward once wrote, "So many can tell you 'no' ... but you only need one person to say 'yes.'" Once I get a "yes," then the rest will immediately fall into place.

As for my website, I've updated some things and will update more. Attempting digital minimalism has helped so much with everything! It's funny to get back to posting on my own website, instead of someone else's. It's fun though! Also despite being amazing at SEO, I will stop worrying about it on here unless I'm writing a post about a breakout topic.

Rest of 2023 Goals

The ultimate goal is to finally finish the manuscript for my mom's memoir, get some of those chapters published, win some contests, get a bomb ass literary agent. Again, once I get a "yes," then the rest will immediately fall into place. Also I have a story I'm working on. It really terrifies me but I have angels who will help me get it published and stay protected. Tryna serve justice and such, to heal families.

In my personal life, I want to finally take Franklin to Legoland in New York. And eventually to the Cartoon Network hotel, maybe Knott's Berry Farm, definitely all the cool Philadelphia stuffChicago, back to Houston again. Of course I want to take him to Thailand, Vietnam, Sierra Leone, France, Alaska.

Me, I wanna go to Birmingham Alabama and enjoy those big fine chivalrous Black men. Also Chicago, NYC, Philadelphia. Maybe a cruise all by myself? Or just some kind of international travel alone.

When it comes to dating, I just ain't got it in me to do the dance. Besides, all these niggas is secretly married anyway. So your guess is as good as mine. I will say this, I am 99.999999 percent sure that if there's a man for me he is absolutely not in New Orleans. Could be down the bayou or something though, so a weekend in Black Lafayette or elsewhere in Louisiana could be lovely.

Thank you again for subscribing and for reading! This one was hella long, but the rest won't be since I won't be trying to catch up after years.

Love always,

Megan
